Fonon Technologies is advancing the Laser Shield Anti-Drone System (LSAD) to counter the threat posed by small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). This is a directed energy laser system designed to neutralize Groups 1 – 2 UAS effectively.
With the increasing use of small-scale drones in conflict zones worldwide, as well as in drug trafficking, the need for advanced perimeter defense systems is more urgent than ever. The LSAD’s energy efficiency ensures optimal resource utilization without compromising security, making it an ideal solution for forward operating bases (FOBs) and vehicles engaged in mission-critical activities.
Unlike traditional counter-drone solutions that rely on kinetic projectiles or electronic jamming, the LSAD leverages a moderate-power, high-density laser beam. This focused energy approach provides precision engagement while minimizing collateral damage, which is a critical advantage in complex operational environments such as urban communities, border security zones, or sensitive infrastructure sites.
A series of executive orders recently issued by the White House emphasize the need to “restore American airspace sovereignty” and prioritize domestic solutions to emerging UAS threats. The Department of Homeland Security has even announced plans to “award a potential $100 million to procure counter-UAS capabilities”, while the Department of Defense has intensified both testing and training efforts to ensure warfighters are prepared for the evolving drone battlespace.
The U.S. Coast Guard has also stressed its expanding need for counter-UAS capabilities as drones increasingly appear in maritime operations. These sentiments echo recent directives from the Secretary of Defense to stand up an interagency counter-UAS task force.
